SHAMBHALA SUN JANUARY 2013 61 TRADITIONAL CALLIGRAPHY was an important part of Chögyam Trungpa’s training as a young incarnate teacher in Tibet. After his arrival in North America in 1970, he was deeply influenced by Zen calligraphy and studied the ideograms of Chinese origin called kanji. Brushstroke calligraphy became an important vehicle for Trungpa Rinpoche to express his realization—for those fortunate enough to watch him in the act of artistic creation, and for those meditating on his calligraphies today.
