Lions Roar : March 2009
SHAMBHALA SUN MArcH 2009 15 one of my favorites. i can’t help but wonder, though, what good it does. what’s the point of getting all upset over someone else’s pain when we can’t ease it for them? i worry that we’re just vicariously delving into strangers’ tragedies so that we can feel better about our own lives, but i hope that we’re reading their stories so that we can learn to extend greater compassion to all beings. ivy scott san francisco, california My vote i was sad to read charles Johnson’s one- sided endorsement of a political candidate (november, 2008). what i do not need is another ego-centered editor telling me how to vote. Betty Green Kettering, ohio MiaMi Sun i’ll never achieve the big e in this lifetime. certainly not in Miami. the fact is, nobody has ever achieved enlightenment while liv- ing in a tropical tourist destination. here, the only thing people aren’t deeply attached to is their clothing. honestly, i believe that if the dalai lama lived in Miami he’d re- nounce his vow of chastity, buy a pair of speedos, and move to south Beach. that’s why i’m shooting to be reborn in a place where the women are demure, everyone’s a vegetarian, and there aren’t so many temptations to avoid. that’s when i’ll finally become a good Buddhist, achieve enlightenment, and leave the rest of you suckers behind. in the meantime, i’ll continue to meditate on my breath (in, out, in, out) and on my martini (lift, sip, lift, sip), and i’ll try my best not to devolve into a lower life form. in other words, keep that subscription coming. Bob silverstein Miami, florida correction on the contributors’ page of the January, 2009, issue, the Sun stated incorrectly that elizabeth hamilton and ezra Bayda were students of charlotte Joko Beck at the zen center of san diego. Beck retired from zcsd in 2006 and has established a center in prescott, arizona. she is no longer af- filiated with the zen center of san diego, nor with hamilton and Bayda. ♦ We welcome letters to the editor.
