Lions Roar : May 2016
A.JESSEJIRYUDAVIS MEET A TEACHER Roshi Pat Enkyo O’Hara I HAD A SOMEWHAT UNUSUAL childhood and early life: shuttling between a solitary, devout Catholic father and an unconventional mother; several stepfathers. Growing up in Tijuana, Mexico, then high school in San Diego, and college at Berkeley in the sixties. Politics, psychedelics, Central America, communes, and motherhood. Getting involved in video art, community-activist video, doctorate in media ecology (how media affects our ideas of reality), research and teaching at NYU. Always reading and studying Zen as spiritual support for my life and work during that time. AIDS hit our sangha pretty hard and working with those affected turned me toward a full-time commitment to provid- ing a spiritual sanctuary in New York City. I resigned my profes- sorship and have devoted my energy to offering a Zen practice place and community in the heart of the city. The Village Zendo celebrates its thirtieth birthday in 2016. ♦ www.insightla.org Mindfulness Classes | Retreats | Special Events New_ShambhalaSun_6.15 - Orchid.indd 1 6/12/15 8:35 AM LION’S ROAR | MAY 2016 32 CULTURE • LIFE • PRACTICE
