THIS DHARMA LIFE Life at 80: Everything Is Precious Buddhist teacher SYLVIA BOORSTEIN reflects on a rich and long life and the love that grows ever stronger with the realization of impermanance. ELIZABETHBOORSTEIN WHEN I BEGAN TO STUDY the Bud- dha’s teachings at the age of forty, one story that resonated deeply with me even then was the Buddha’s awaken- ing through seeing an old person, a sick person, and a dead person. Although I had been aware since adolescence of the fragility of life, as I moved into midlife I was becoming anxious and somewhat depressed. I understood that the path of Buddhist practice promised that I could meet life’s challenges with equanimity, which is what I wanted to do. I still felt that oldness, sickness, and death were far into the future for me, and that I had time to prepare. Now, almost as if it happened all of a sudden, I’m past my eightieth birth- day. I was born on July 24, 1936, and my memory of childhood events makes them seem as if they happened yesterday. I remember the big, dangling, pro-FDR earrings that my mother wore during the 1944 election campaign. I remem- ber that my father cried when the news came the following April that President “I am happy to tell my age,” says Boorstein, “and grateful to all the role models of mature, competent women.” UPCOMING PROGRAMS IN 2017 Next Stage Facilitation 3-Day Intensives and 9-month Training Programs.
