Lions Roar : July 2007
SHAMBHALA SUN JULY 2007 30 It is inspiring that you are willing to come to the United States, to this retreat center, and to experience discomfort. Probably the most difficult thing for some of you was that you have had to eat nothing but vegetarian food. [Prolonged laughter.] A lot of you had never before had to be vegetarian over the course of several days, and yet here every meal was vegetarian. So you have tasted a bit of suf- fering, and that counts as putting your- selves through some difficulty. Perhaps if you fretted over eating veg- etarian food, you could remind yourselves that many people in this world cannot get their hands on anything even close to the fare we’ve been eating here. So when we think that way, perhaps we will give rise to gratitude for what we have—cultivating a mind of contentment. So, with this in mind, was the food OK? [Chorus of “yeahs” and prolonged applause.] That means we have failed! [Prolonged laughter.] I had instructed the kitchen crew to cook very bad vegetarian food in order to put you thorough some suffering (laugh- ter), but they did not follow my instruc- tions. Instead they made good vegetarian food. We know, however, that they worked hard to make you happy, so we’ll thank them anyway. [Cheers and applause.] To conclude I want to say that it is very important that you do not become dis- appointed with the world. Probably most of the planet’s 6.5 billion people have an erroneous view about things, think- ing that happiness comes with material comforts. But when you think about it, throughout human history, bringing life and hope to humanity has always been accomplished by a small handful of peo- ple who have the correct understanding, and with this correct understanding they have been able to lead the rest of us to- ward a more enlightened view. Therefore, I encourage every single oneofyoutomakeavowtogiveriseto the compassion to help others, because if every one of you makes such a vow, then the twenty-first century will be filled with hope. You are our future. ♦ Director of Operations New Moon Foundation is seeking an inspired and inspiring leader to guide the growth of our organization.
