THIS DHARMA LIFE The Seasons of Life and Death One year after the death of his father, the famed Buddhist scholar Taitetsu Unno, MARK UNNO reflects on the great compassion that embraces and unites us all. IN THE BUDDHIST WAY of thinking, one of the main sources of confusion for human beings is that we take the labels we put on things for the things themselves. Then we define our relations accordingly, not knowing that they are words and concepts of our own making: she’s smart, he’s not; I like chocolate ice cream; I don’t want to eat my veggies; high and low; young and old; life and death. But when we are able to go deep within ourselves and open our minds and hearts to the truth of the universe, we find that these categories are ephem- eral, like the leaves in the wind. Distinc- tions begin to dissolve into the great flow of the oneness of reality, where all of our minds, all of our hearts, become as one JIMGIPE Tai Unno was a thirteenth-generation Shin priest and a pioneer of Buddhist studies in the U.S. He taught for many years at Smith College.
