Lions Roar : July 2016
BODHI CHATTER Dharma, pop culture, and good-natured gossip. Iron Fist—whom cre- ator Marvel describes as a “billionaire New York Buddhist monk martial arts super- hero”—is making a comeback. Since Iron Fist will be played by Game of Thrones’ Finn Jones, you’d expect it to be an unqualified hit, but it probably won’t be with Asian American viewers, who’ve been campaigning Marvel to re-vision the character, white since his 1974 debut. The charge of white-washing seems to be an ongoing problem for Marvel, who’ve cast the role of “The Ancient One,” in this fall’s Doctor Strange, not with a Tibetan man—as is comic-book canon—but with Tilda Swinton. Marvel, hoping to avoid a Chinese boycott of the film, has insisted that “The Ancient One is a moniker passed down through time, and in this particular film the embodiment is Celtic.” • • • In a seg- ment for his recent Conan in Korea stint, Conan O’Brien and The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun, reprising his role as Conan’s sidekick and trans- lator, tried a little medita- tion—and humor—at Bok- wangsa, a Buddhist temple in South Korea. Conan’s facetious first impres- sion? “It’s such a peaceful place—but the wind chimes are making me crazy.” To watch it, search “Conan” at LionsRoar.com • • • “Big Screen Buddhism” was the cover theme of our last issue, and in this issue we share some of your favorites.
