The secret is to stay grounded. On these long and adventurous runs, try to maintain your attention all the way to the end—both mindfulness and awareness, both introspection and consciousness. 4. Contemplate In this phase, focus on connecting with deep inner wishes and aspirations. Make your run contemplative. Run in solitude or at a slower pace so you can deeply consider particular feelings, thoughts, or insights. Choose a theme, such as kind- ness or patience, and let that be your focus. When you bring beneficial thoughts to mind, the run becomes the meditation. The body is the magical horse and the mind is the magical jewel. Confidence and power occur when these two come together and feel good about what they are doing. Mind training can enhance any physical activity, and exercise helps keep the body from becoming a nuisance when you’re sitting still. Even short peri- ods of moving or meditating count—the more we do it, the healthier it feels. When you come home from work, try this: First, sit and meditate for ten minutes. Bathing in the moment removes the day’s stress and puts you into contact with your big, naturally healthy mind. Resting there, you become more open- hearted and caring. Then, go for a run. Let your sense perceptions, your connection to the ele- ments, and the movement of your body enter you into the larger world. With the discipline of being present in your run, you bring forth the natural radiance of both body and mind. ♦ posture. Make sure your body is aligned. When your mind drifts, come back to the posture, the trail, or the breath. Take off your headset. Notice how you feel. Feeling the aches and pains is actu- ally an important psychological step in being present. Be with yourself and the running with full-heartedness. 2. Expand your Awareness During this phase, train in developing panoramic awareness. Continue to pay attention to your posture and the road, but take in more of the environment—both the internal and the external. Feel your rhythm, the pounding of your heart, your feet hitting the trail. Tune in to the sky, the air, and the sounds. Recognize your innate healthiness. Build positive reinforcement by appreciating your run. Enjoy it. 3. Challenge Yourself The focus in this phase is accomplish- ment and challenge. Now go beyond your comfort zone. Pick a goal that challenges you: a longer run, a new location. Release yourself from the small-mindedness of hope, fear, and ambition by daring to relax into a bigger space. Learning about dying teaches us how to live, and learning about living teaches us how to die. When we can view the continuity of these processes, the distinction between the con- cepts of life and death begins to dissolve and this changes the perception of everything.
