Artist Tom Killion and poet Gary Snyder share an appreciation for the High Sierra, the protected area of the Sierra Nevada that is above 9000 feet and accessible only by foot. Snyder describes mountain climbing as his “first spiritual experience,” and while he and several of the Beat poets are most famously associated with theNorthernCascades, he’s also hiked theHigh Sierras for forty years. Here Killion collects poetry and previously unpublished excerpts from Snyder’s backpacking journals—along with writings from conservationist John Muir—to compliment his woodcut images, whichmeld traditional Japanese and European printmaking techniques.
